Workin' With What Ya Got- A Cute Accent

I love to look around my home and find things that were right in front of me all along but don't get noticed. Then I like to make them over (or under depending on the item) to really "shine".....can ya tell I would work really well for Oprah?? Or Nate Berkus, yes, him. I like him muuuuucccchhhh better....:)

So I had this cute little frame:

It's very shabby chic and it came this way from the store. I think I got this as a gift over 5 years ago and had it in my laundry area with another picture in it and I looked at it every.single.day. But I just felt that this was too cute to be stuck next to the dryer sheets so I did something about it......

I took out the glass frame (which, as I am typing this, I realize that this isn't the right frame. This is for another project/blog post..hee hee....but you get the drift  :) and spray painted it black.

Then I found this on my decor shelf in the basement:

I got this (which is supposed to be a Christmas ornament) at Kohl's after Christmas for $1.50. I love keys, old keys, things that look like keys but I had no idea where to put this. In fact, I have two more in the basement because I loved them so much and knew that I would regret it if I walked away from them.

So I spray painted the key red and got out some glue:

And next thing ya know......

I got a cute little accent piece! I love this!! I absolutely heart this!!! This makes me swoon!!
Can ya tell that I like this?? :)

I put it in a little plate holder and have it on an end table in our livingdiningroom....

And here is the thing: I didn't spend a dime AND you can re-create this in your home too. How? Easy...

- everyone has picture frames, whether they are metal, wooden, plastic..you name it and you probably have it. Or just as good, run into your local Goodwill store and pick up a frame for under a buck. They have tons of them. I will not spend more than 1 dollar on a frame at Goodwill unless it is one of those big ugly pictures from the 70's that has a bitchin' (excuse the language but it was really the best adjective I could think of) frame that could be re-purposed to say make a cool Ballard Designs-esque cork board.....can ya tell I am trying to cook that up at the moment?? :) So the frame should be no problem to find....

- then paint the glass any color you want! Heck, you could even get rid of the glass all together and paint the inside of the back of the frame for more of a shadow box look. If you have been reading my blog for at least a month and don't have a can of spray paint by now, I am a little sad....:) Black, white and red spray paint are only 99 cents at Wal Mart. Every day. No, I swear they don't pay me to advertise....they should but they don't.

- find something cool around the house, under the bed, in the back bowels of the closet or in the basement that you can glue to the inside for interest. It could be an old baby bootie, a love letter, an old chew toy from a beloved pet, you name it!

Have fun!!

Cool idea! :) Sadly my local oppie charges more than $1 for frames. Sad isn't it. I will just have to keep my eyes open!
I so want to try the spray painting scene... and, I have paint! :D
