This recipe is a favorite from my youth!
Actually, my brother is the one who reminded me of this gem a few months ago while we were talking on the phone. Our school cafeteria system had the best food when we were small in the rural Ohio school we attended.
This was back when the lunch ladies got to the kitchens at 7 am to actually cook the food not just heat it up in the microwave.
The food was so good!
Taco bowl (head here for the recipe), peanut butter bars (handmade and better than Reese’s) and wiener winks (the bread looks like it is winking at you, hence the name) just to name a few.
So here is my one of my fave childhood recipes that neither of my children like.
What’s not to like about bread, cheese and a hot dog?
They like all of these things separately but not together.
1- white bread
2- hot dogs
3- cheese slices
Please do not try to make this low fat because it won’t work. I have tried with whole wheat bread, 40 calorie hot dogs and the like.
Go big or go home with this recipe.
Spray a cookie sheet with Pam and preheat the oven to 350. Butter both sides of the bread and place the cheese on one side of the bread then the hot dog. Curve the bread up over the hot dog and cheese like a taco and stick a toothpick in to hold; I find that I need to use two or three toothpicks to get this to hold. Repeat with as many wiener winks as you want to make, place on cookie sheet and bake for 20-30 minutes (around 20 minutes I check on them), or until bread is brown and crispy.
- White bread
- Hot dogs
- Cheese slices
- Spray cookie sheet with non-stick spray and preheat your oven to 350. Butter both side of your bread; on one side of bread, place a piece of cheese and a hot dog. Curve bread up to create a makeshift hot dog bun. Use two or three toothpicks to secure in place. Repeat with as many wiener winks as you wish to make. Place on the cookie sheet and bake for 20-30 minutes until brown and crispy.
