Dollar Tree Craft- Mercury Glass Candle Holders + Lookie What I Got At 75 % Off!!

Did ya see the title?? Yep, I am back with a Dollar Tree craft! I do have to say, DT has been a little disappointing lately....or maybe it is all about point of view but I have not been able to find anything in that store to give me some inspiration. I didn't even really shop there for the holidays this year either, just for a few stocking stuffers but really nothing was standing out to me.

Until a few days ago......

I found these guys in the craft aisle:

Basic glass cylinder vases.

But I decided I wasn't going to use them as vases.....

I got out these bad boys:

Some water in a spray bottle and looking glass spray paint.

A few weeks ago I shared the recipe I found on Pinterest for creating mercury glass and I will share it again because it is genius.
 Pure genius.
It will look just like those mercury glass items that cost way too much money at places like Pottery Barn and the like.
Only it will only set you back 11 bucks for the paint.
I know,I know, very pricey for spray paint but when you consider how much what you are creating would cost if you paid retail for it, 11 bucks is bargain basement.
Plus I got my can for free.
Sorry don't mean to brag.
Well, yes I kind of did. :)
But I didn't get it because I blog or did an ad for them, I got it with Amazon points so its all good.

So you take your spray bottle of water (any spray bottle will do but it must be sprayed) and spray the surface of what you will be painting thoroughly. Then immediately spray the surface with the spray paint.

It will look something like this:

***really bad garage picture alert***

I know, baaaaad picture but do you see the little bubbles on the vase? It will look awful when you do this but you are doing it right, trust me.
I did two coats for mine but if you wanted to achieve a shinier mercury glass, I would recommend two more coats. I am running out the the looking glass paint and wanted to make sure they all looked even so stopped at two coats.

And here they are all done:

I am using them as tall candleholders!

I loved how they turned out but if you wanted them a little shinier, just use more steps than I did.

I may eventually add more paint to this if I decide to be less of a cheapskate and buy another can. :)

I already had the tray and the pinecones I salvaged from my Christmas table scape.

Cost for me to make:

Four dollars for the vases!!!

So I alluded to a certain 75% off sale in the title of the blog and I just wanted to share with you what I got last week:

Have you seen these??
They were all over Pinterest and blogs throughout the holiday season.
They are just adorable but the big one with the green tree?
Yeah, 38 bucks for just one at Anthropologie.
Yeah, noooooo....
Mine was 9.50!!!!!

The small ones were only 7.50!!
So I walked out of Anthropologie with three of these bad boys plus a knob for our linen closet for under 29 bucks!!
I was waiting for security to take me away for stealing these puppies 'cuz that is a good deal.
It would have cost me much more than 9 bucks to create this on my own so I was one happy girl.

Wee!

Happy beginning of January!!

Love them - and what a steal!

These look great! I made some mercury glass with the mirror paint too - that stuff is amazing. And actually affordable if you consider how much you can make. I used vinegar water for mine but it looks like just water works about the same!

So did you paint the outside of the vases? So many seem to do the insides and it just seems like that would be harder. I already have several of these DT vases left over from a wedding.

Really cute and simple project. Never tire of the mercury glass tutes because you are right, the originals are a bit pricey.

Thanks for sharing!
