Workin’ WIth What Ya Got- IKEA Footstool

Hey there, hi there, ho there! How was your weekend?
I hope you have no mosquito bites and power.
It seems a lot of my Ohio contingent did not have power over the weekend due to the storm, so I hope you are reading this now because that means you do indeed have power!
If not, I can read this to you by candlelight. We had a great weekend here, lots of mosquito bites which usually = a good weekend.
We went up to Door County, Wisconsin for the day with our friends Rebecca, Bernie and Kelsey as well as our little family of four.
Such a special day with special people.
Just so you know, Door County is four hours away.
And we did that drive twice.
In one day.
But totally worth it.

Breakfast at Al Johnson’s.
This was the hot chocolate.
That was just whipped cream from a can, as we found out.
But it tastes so much better in Wisconsin.

Jumping off a pier.

Making sand castles.
Or in this case, rock castles.

Colorful Adirondack chairs.
These babies were everywhere up there.

Look at these cute flower buckets!

If you have never been to Door County and you live in the Midwest, please try and make time to visit.
You won’t regret it.
It really is a treasure of the Midwest.

So we all know I am far from perfect.

I mean really far.

And one of the cute little things that I do that make me not so perfect when it comes to blogging about home improvement ideas is that I forget to take the “before” picture.

I mean if you are trying to prove to your awesome readers about how cool this new makeover is to your furniture, you really, really need to be able to show them the ugly before.

Because it really isn’t a oooh or ahhh moment if you didn’t see how hideous it looked before.

I have had this Ikea rattan footstool for ages.
I wanna say at least 15 years.
Around the time Ikea or the rattan footstool was probably invented, that’s how long I have had it.

I loved it, used it all the time and took good care of it.
Originally it was a stained rattan look.
Then two years ago I spray painted it black.
But how would you even know that because there is no proof.

Lemme tell you a little something about myself.
I like me some black and gray in a color palette.
If you went into my closet right now, I can guarantee there are at least ten more black or gray anything than any other color.
I have been like this for years and I don’t know why.
Maybe it is my soul crying out??
I used to be this way with decor.
My go to colors were black, tan and red.
I am trying to get past that though and head for lighter, happier colors.

So I had this black Ikea rattan foot stool that went unnoticed for years.

And here is what I did with it:

Spray painted the top Heirloom White by Rustoleum.
Then painted the sides Warm Yellow by Rustoleum.
Then I got really crazy……
I found these number stencils in my craft area of the basement last weekend.
I had a select few numbers.
2, 5 and 6.
I picked 5.
I wanted 4 as that is the number of peeps in our little fam.
But I didn’t have 4,
I had only 5.
Then I remembered that there are 5 of us in this little family.
I totally forgot about Lucy, our almost 6-year-old goldfish.
5 it is!!
I whipped out my spray paint, Exotic Sea by Valspar.
And here is what it turned out like:

Isn’t it so much better??? Oh that’s right, you have no idea how much better it is.

Love the idea of putting a number on it. And I feel your pain with the "before" picture thing. ARG! Wish I could be like Martha Stewart & have "people" to take photos for me. He he. ALSO, I really enjoyed that picture of all the colorful chairs lined up.

    Warmly, Michelle
