My Kind Of Movies- Buckeye Edition
1- A Christmas Story (1983)– This great cult classic was filmed in Cleveland but was set in Hammond, Indiana with little references thrown in the movie as a nod to the filming location (the home’s address was Cleveland Street). I remember watching this movie with my family and friends in the 80’s and rolling on the floor with laughter, yelling out fave quotes on the ski lifts at Snow Trails with my good friend Dana and watching this movie over and over. It still never gets old…well maybe a little old when they run it for 24 hours straight on Christmas Eve.
Favorite line of the movie- “Fragileay-must be Italian.”
2- Major League (1989) -This movie came out the summer I moved to Chicago and made me so homesick for Ohio….but wait a minute…it wasn’t filmed in Cleveland but almost entirely filmed in…..Milwaukee??? Really?? Actually, I had a friend at the time who said she was there at the ballpark while they filmed and you can see her in one of the game scenes if you look really close. She was also a pathological liar so who knows. Great movie if only for Bob Uecker alone.
Favorite line of the movie- “Remember, fans, Tuesday is Die Hard Night. Free admission for anyone who was actually alive the last time the Indians won the pennant.”
3- Tommy Boy (1995)– Set primarily in Sandusky, Ohio (whoo hoo Cedar Point!), this movie was actually filmed in and around Toronto Canada. I have to say, the first time I saw this movie, I hated it. I even said out loud, “stupidest movie I have ever seen”. Then I saw it again, again and again (hey- I have a hubby, dad and a brother who love these kinds of movies and Chris Farley) and have grown to love it over the years. I am a fan of SNL (at least older school SNL) and so I happen to kind of like silly movies (especially anything with Adam Sandler and Will Farrell). When you have had a bad week and don’t want to think about anything, this is your movie.
Favorite line(s) of the movie- (sorry, this is one of those movies whose quotes are probably better than the movie itself)
“That’s gonna leave a mark”
“Fat guy in a little coat! Fat guy in a little coat”
“Not here or here so much….. but right ‘here’ ”
“Ugh, I can actually hear you getting fatter”
4- Heathers (1988)- O M G what a dark movie but it was soo good too. One of those movies you just couldn’t look away from and Christian Slater was so creepy in this movie. Well, he is kinda creepy in every movie he’s in. It is set in a fictional Ohio town/high school and could have been made at my high school or any high school in America with snooty cliques. I believe this was entirely shot in California and how they got away with making it seem like Ohio in California is beyond me. Great classic creepy movie. Think horror film without any of the gore. Or a weird guy in a mask (that would be Christian Slater in this film).
Favorite line of the movie-
“If you were happy every day of your life you wouldn’t be a human being. You’d be a game-show host.”
5- Shawshank Redemption (1994)- OK please don’t make fun but I have never seen this movie. Crickets chirping. I know I am a social outcast but you know how I feel about movies/theaters!! My hubs is outraged that I have never seen this and this is the kicker…we own it. I know, I know. I was actually gonna watch it before I posted this but it is hard to even find time to watch a taped episode of Housewives in my home let alone a 3 hour movie. So I am paying tribute to my actual hometown/county by adding this movie. I hear it is wonderful, I just haven’t seen it. Yet. 🙂
*Update- I have seen it and I loved it.
Here is what wikipedia.org says about this classic-
“Though the story is set in Maine, the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio was used as a stand-in for the fictional Shawshank Prison. However, the scenes of the prison cell blocks were actually filmed on a sound stage built inside the near-by shuttered Westinghouse factory. Downtown scenes were also filmed in Mansfield, as well as neighboring Ashland, Ohio.”
The reformatory is now used for weddings/events and during Halloween it is used as a Haunted Prison. No. Thank. You.
And a big thank you to my Ohio readers! You make up about 40-45% of my viewers and I love all of you.
